Guilds, Lockouts, and a Buyers Market
The moment Blizzard announced the changes to raid lockouts, I rejoiced. I cheered. There may even have been some standing up and dancing involved, maybe. You see, I'm a 10-man raider and I am one by choice. The idea that I can raid what I want without feeling pressured into doing 25-mans because of the better loot is a change I fully approve of. It is not, however, a change without consequences or without controversy. This change will impact each and every one of us on an individual level.
The changes to Azeroth because of this may be as significant as the sundering itself, and my thoughts on them continue after the break!

News Roundup: Battleground Bracket Change, Vengeance Explanation, Rob Pardo Interview
I was writing up individual posts for these, but I figured it'd be best to combine them so I didn't spam your RSS Feeds. So!
More news—a post from Ghostcrawler about tanking changes, a major change to the way Battlegrounds are divided, and a cool interview with J. Allen Brack.
Read on for the breakdown, and the full blue quotes!

The Weekly Marmot - The Hardcore 10-Man Guild
This week I get into a little bit of a hypothetical discussion. With 10-Mans becoming more "hardcore friendly" in Cataclysm, what will a "Hardcore 10-Man Guild" look like? What sort of issues will they face? And how does this compare to a 25-man guild?

Cataclysm: Updated Combat Resurrection Design
Zarhym just posted a rather interesting announcement: in Cataclysm raiders will only be allowed
one use of Rebirth or Soulstone in 10-player encounters.
In 25-player raid encounters, you will be able to use a maximum of
3 resurrections
. There is no equivalent of a "Sated" debuff to track how many times you have resurrected.
What is everyone's opinion on this? Do you think it's better for raiders or worse?

Guest Post: Who Leads Your Raids?
I've been sending emails back and forth with
Djane
for a little while now, and he's expressed a desire to do a little WoW-related sociological research. Specifically, he's wondering whether there is a gender bias between raid leaders, as compared to the normal WoW-playing population.
So what do you think, readers? Take a moment to join us for a little highbrow discussion, and let's see if we can't do a little scientific inquiry!

Cataclysm Heroic Raid Testing + New Premades Available
Blizzard has issued a call to arms for feedback of the Heroic difficulty modes of the upcoming Cataclysm raids, now testable on the Cataclysm Beta servers. Threads have been made on the official forums requesting feedback for each of the new encounters. Cataclysm Beta Testers can access these threads and offer valuable feedback
here
.
To make this testing a little easier, Blizzard has made available new premade template characters, decked out in
item level 359
gear (including full sets of
Tier 11
). Each account should have 5 new premades available.
There are new premade 359 templates available, but feel free to try with the 346 templates and whatever epics you might of gained from previous raid testing if you wish.
I wanted to take this opportunity to remind you guys that the
Wowhead Client
does
in fact work on the Cataclysm Beta realms and implore you guys to run the
Wowhead Looter
addon while participating in any Cataclysm content. We'll always keep doing ou

World of Warcraft Live Raid
Last year I missed the World of Warcraft Live Raid, and I've been kicking myself ever since. Battles with all the 5-man bosses at once, and a climactic battle with Uber-Hogger--I knew I wasn't going to miss that again.
So here we are, settled in, waiting for the Live Raid this year! Can't wait to see what Blizzard pulls out this time...

Beta Raid Testing Schedule
Looks like we are finally going to get a chance to test the new Cataclysm raids! On Sunday
October 17th
at 13:00 PDT beta testers will be able to test the
Omnitron Defense System
in
Descenso do Asa Negra
and
Halfus Wyrmbreaker
in
Bastião do Crepúsculo
.
If you plan to take a trip into either instance this weekend we would hope you are running the
Wowhead Client
to help gather data for the encounters!
We're going to start testing a few raid encounters on all Beta servers this Sunday, October 17 at 13:00 PDT. Two encounters will be tested:
Omnitron Defense System in Blackwing Descent
Halfus Wyrmbreaker in The Bastion of Twilight
Blackwing Descent is a raid zone with an entrance located along the side of Blackrock Mountain.
The Bastion of Twilight's entrance is located within Twilight Highlands.
Since these are the beta realms, this schedule is subject to change at a moment's notice due to bugs and server issues. More raid tests will be occurring over the next few weeks.

I know we all can't wait to make fun of the latest Paladin frocks, right? I've included all of the current Tier 11 armor sets in this post, and you can be sure that they'll be added to our [u

Let's get down to the meat and potatoes of this announcement: Lich King heroic bosses will give

. Cataclysm bosses will give

4.0.1: New Flexible Raid Lockout System
A while ago, Blizzard announced that they would be changing the way raid lockouts work so players would no longer be required to raid the same content multiple times a week to increase progression. After a long wait,
Bashiok
has announced the new
Flexible Raid Lockout System
that will be introduced with 4.0.1. At launch, it will only be available for
Cidadela da Coroa de Gelo
and
Santuário Rubi
In these dungeons, you will only have to kill each boss once on any difficulty level to count toward a completion of the instance. For example, you could kill the first 3 bosses in Icecrown one night on 10-player and then the next night get 25 people together and kill
Carrasco Saurfang
and the rest of the bosses. To help coordinate what bosses you have killed there will be a new UI element that shows you what encounters you have already defeated along with a way for raid leaders to link in chat what they have defeated.
You can check out the full announcement and some more examples by Bashiok after the break.

Emblems to Justice Points Conversion Update
Another short news post, folks. Some week ago Blizzard published the planned conversion rates for the current Wrath emblem currencies to the new Cataclysm points. The post listed Emblems of Triumph and Emblems of Frost as being worth 2.75 Justice Points each. This number has been updated, as well as the 2g per Emblem if you are above the cap. The
original blog
has been updated to reflect those changes, and Bashiok's post on the official forums has been included below:
We’ve revised the Justice Points conversion rate for Emblems of Triumph and Emblems of Frost. When the upcoming 4.0.1 patch goes live, these emblems will be converted into 11.58 Justice Points (up from the previously planned 2.75 Justice Points per emblem). Justice Points accrued above the soft cap of 4,000 will be converted to gold at a rate of 47.5 silver per point (down from 2 gold per point) when patch 4.0.3 goes live.

The Weekly Marmot - End of Expansion Raiding Options
This week, I answer a question from
Damingo, the Prairie Dog Lord
(yeaaahhhhh...) and talk a bunch about end of expansion raiding from a raider's perspective. When you really want to raid but guilds keep falling apart around you, what options do you have? Do you just give up, or is there another way?

Cataclysm Map Update! New Classic / Cataclysm Dungeon + Raid Maps and More!
Epic map update! We've got
tons
of new maps straight from the latest Cataclysm beta patch, including new maps for classic dungeons and raids! Hopefully leveling in the newly streamlined Cataclysm questing zones doesn't go too fast so players will actually have a use for 'em! At least players will no longer have to discover a low level dungeon before being able to queue for it. Now all they need is to add a tour guide to
Sunken Temple
- you may laugh, but they actually
did
add tour guide NPCs to a certain quest in one of those horrible night elf barrow dens! Ever get lost in one of those for an hour or so? Yeesh.
Check out all the cartographical coolness after the break!

Cataclysm: Zul'Gurub Gone!
Sad news for a lot of people,
Valnoth
has just made a post on the official forums stating
Zul'Gurub
will be removed in Cataclysm. No word yet on if
Tigre Zulian Veloz
or
Raptor Razzashi Veloz
will be moved elsewhere, but we can only hope!
Zul'Gurub is gone as a raid instance come Cataclysm.

The Weekly Marmot - End of Expansion Raiding
So this week I take a look back through my experiences with raiding in the weeks and months prior to the release of Wrath of the Lich King and The Burning Crusade to give a little insight into what exactly is happening right now that's causing so much trouble for so many guilds. Why are so many players quitting their guilds? Why are so many quitting the game entirely? And just because I'm never content to just sit around and talk about how bad things can be, I give some tips and ideas for dealing with it and making sure your guild isn't one that falls victim to the dreaded End of Expansion Blues.

Professional Skillsets
Just a few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to attend an event called "Afroshoto", held at Boardners down in Hollywood. The event featured a small invitational Super Street Fighter 4 Tournament—8 total players, single elimination—as well as a small concert by a group called the Miles Mosley Band (which I recommend highly).
It was all in all a very successful event, especially for a Sunday night, which is hardly a major bargoing night. The band was excellent, the tournament was impressive (and watching Justin Wong go all the way with
Makoto
, my character of choice, was nice), and it was awesome as always to be at a public gaming event.
The band leader said something interesting, though, as they were setting up. I can't remember well enough to quote exactly, but the sentiment was something like this:
For the first time in history, technology has advanced to the point that the toys of our childhood have evolved enough to remain our primary form of recreation as adults.
This stuck with me, long after the event itself. The more I think about it, the more I realize not only how true it is, but how
important
it is.
