What I did (once I recovered from the shock of realizing that the event starts as soon as you accept the quest) was start at the center mortar (the one pointing out into the bay). As soon as the mortars became usable (which takes a couple of moments after Tethyr is in position), I hit the one I was standing at and immediately started running between all three, stopping only long enough to fire each one. The major says to keep moving for a reason -- as soon as each shot lands, Tethyr hits you with a water bolt that knocks you back a good 10-15 yards (I wasn't paying enough attention to see if it also did damage, though). Particularly as you're heading out to either of the side cannons, you'll want to be aware of where you're getting knocked to so you don't lose too much time getting back on course.

I cleared this on my first try with 4/12 marksmen remaining. Good luck!

Just a couple extra points:

The knockback actually is a bit farther than 10-15 yrds; It's more like 30. If you're lucky, you'll hit something in the way, and not go too far.

The marksmen can also be healed, which made it extremely easy as a Priest. I just ran to a canon, fired it, and tossed a renew at every marksman as I passed them. Only lost 1 by the end of it (mainly because I never stopped to heal them, only used renews).

This is a level 36 quest that can be done solo.

If you get blown off the dock, you fail.

I was doing this quest in a group with one other, and I fell in to the water was blown off the dock, and it failed. When we tried again, I died and it failed. Then I couldnt pick it up again, the other person in my group couldnt share it, she dropped it, and neither of us could pick it up. Everyone remained in position, it kept raining, we waited several minutes and gave up . .. .bugged maybe?

The easiest way to do this is just to go to one of the cannons on the side, wait for him to be targetable and then just right-click the cannon, run to the middle, use it, run to the far side, use it, and then reverse. You need to hit about 10-11 mortar hits on him, but all mortars hit and have no casting time so can be used on the run. As long as you keep running you'll be fine.

Level 70 can solo him melee :P I just used healing gear as enhancement, wrath of air, searing and mana totem. He hits 120 melee and 400 waterbolts so it's not a problem to solo him, only 150k health too. ;D

But I would like to point out that when you don't use the cannons it seems to bug. :P

It is easy to avoid getting knocked off the pier!

The knockback move happens when a large, blue beam comes from tethyr's mouth, that beam knock you back.

When you're doing this quest, always watch Tethyr, when the beam appears, make sure you get knocked back into Theramore, then you won't fail the quest.

I found the best way to keep from getting knocked back is stay in front of the cannons not on the warf when you shot the middle cannon and you wont get damaged or knocked back at all. When after you shot the sides hurry and drop down to the front of the warf towards the center cannon. Hope this helps you, I did it on the first try. with many help from the other posts.

Tethyr never even hit me with his spray/knockback move. Shamans in Ghost Wolf form or Hunters with Aspect of the Cheeetah just need to run from one to the next. I started at the cannon on the left facing the bay and started running as soon as the cog appeared. Never stopped moving and thus as each mortar hit tethyr and he turned to attack a marksman in that direction i was almost to the next one. The key is to not stop at all, you can hit the mortar as you pass by.

Druids can speed between the cannons in travel form - 'using' a cannon does not shift you back to caster form.

Tethyr is the same model as The Lurker Below in SSC. His water bolt is similar to Lurker's spout...except the water bolt does no damage.

All you have to do is just click the cannon and than run to the one beside it and click it until he is dead, very ez quest didn't even lose a hp and had 11/12 marksmen at the end just don't jump when his blue shit hits you

I did it as a 33 mage with ease, what I did was once he hit me with the water bolt I quickly used blink and it would pretty much put me right back on course, i was never knocked off the dock!

Easily done as a shaman. Clicking the mortars does not cancel ghost wolf, basically all you have to do is run back and forth clicking mortars as you go by.

Word to the wise - If you don't use any skills on him, he won't have you on his "target" list. He'll still water blast you and all that good stuff, but he won't use a water ball on you unless you've tried to, or have hit him once or twice. At least that's what I've seen.

I can't remember doing a quest that was this much fun! Easy, but still loads of fun, even if someone else is doing the quest and you just happen to be watching. First found out about this when I tried to turn in https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/quest=11193) near the docks, next thing I know a blast of water knocks me clear into the middle of Theramore's marketplace! I turn around to see Thetyr swimming in the harbour, blasting people off the peer. Definately worth your time to do this quest, the fun factor alone is reason enough, and the quest rewards are okay.

Thanks for the tips! As soon as I'd accepted the quest i put my aspect of the cheetah on, went to the left cannon and then clicked it as soon as it was available and just ran round the whole pier again and again clicking the cannons as I passed! Finished with 10 / 12 men alive! Brilliant quest! Very cool!

Easy as a druid, just use travel form, i got knocked back in the beggingin, and that was the only time. 9 marksmen left when i completed it. Very easy, good xp!

On a prot Pali what I did was ran back and forth between the one in the middle and the one on the left. I did fall in the water one but didn't fail. I watched his pattern and when I got hit he tossed me into a box or a towards the tower. Mostly if I was getting too anxious going to the next cannon would get hit.

There is one spot (I forget where, sorry) where the beam dips down and you can run over it.

At the end I had some ally helping..or watching in ready stance if they were melee.

I KNOW! Lowbie Ally helping?! Or maybe they figured phat lootz if they got the killing blow.

Also, one thing that is quite stinky is that,
1. If you fail you have to wait a while for the quest giver to respawn.
2. If you fail tethyr hes still there, and if you dont have anyone over 50 there it gets painfully hard depending on how much health he has left. Since hes a ?? Boss Elite big fish thingy :P.

If you fail this quest and pick it up again, the game will bug. I failed the quest, picked it up again and the rain started. Every marksmen got in position, but Tethyr did not show up. I waited for 15 min for Tethyr to appear, but there was no sign of the beast.

Extremely anoying!!
For me; it resulted in abondoning the quest.

Same here. This quest needs a serious fix.
The problem already starts at the beginning of the quest. Since you don't do direct damage to the mob, it doesn't count as a tag. So even if a low lvl player comes in at the very last point, hitting the mob with a direct spell/attack, he will be tagged by that player. Resulting in you failing the quest, because it wasn't your kill.
Second... being at the docks, where ships come in and out the posibility to get this quest failed by someone tagging it is extremely high.
Third. You can't just fail the quest, and retake it. Like the previous poster already explained. The beast just won't show up.
Meaning you have to abandon it manualy and retake it when the NPC is respawned.
Ofcourse this direclty brings ya back to the first point, the posibility of someone else 'stealing' the kill...

Sure it's a nice quest, the idea with the mortars and making Theramore a bit more exciting is excellent. Too bad it's quite a waste of time on most populated realms, as you never get to finish it, unless ya set ur real life clock to ring you out of bed at 4 Am.

Another interesting thing with this Monster is that when you attack it direcly, it doesn't count as being in Combat. Like with all other mobs. So you can still mount up and run away if you wish to.

If you fail, Major Mills is not around to pick up the quest again. If you leave the dock area and come back, he'll be back there right away.

Remember: the mob fires waterblast always against the clock rotation along the dock. Start left, then middle, and wait for passing blast, go back to left, middle, wait again...
Right cannon is more risky because i have blasted off there once time.
Running around with Ghost wolf is no problem.

But use only middle cannon is okay because there is wall behind you, so the quest cannot fail.

Indeed incredibly easy quest.

Head to the first canon (middle) first, then launch it. Head then to either of the other canons and
repeat this. Notice: Each canon has a cooldown on it. And thats pretty much it. Fun quest overall.

really easy xp. The helm is nice, but it's not something to drool over. You don't get any XP for Tethyr himself, but it's still a nice chunk at quest turn-in.

I couldn't stop laughing..there was a horde player in the water when I start this..he got kill 4x times..every time he would try and swim away..dead,dead,dead...dead..HAHAHA
I finish the quest..and some of the other players on the dock..said what quest was that!!

Probably one of the most fun quests I've done in the game so far. Not too hard, either. Actually, I didn't find it to be hard at all.

Basically, once you start the quest, Tethyr will appear after a few seconds and do a circle around the bit of land that's in between the docks you're going to be using. A little after the start of the second circle, you'll be able to fire the mortars at Tethyr. So basically, I just started at the center mortar, fired it, and then took off to the one on the left, then back to the center, then to the right, and so on and so forth.

The mortars don't have a "cast" time to use, so you don't even have to stop -- and you probably won't want to. The knockback is annoying, but if you don't stop at all there's a chance you might be able to avoid it completely. I wasn't able to test that theory, though, because I didn't realize that you didn't have to stop to use the mortars until Tethyr was almost dead.

i have done this quest a few times, and as of 2.4 it seems, his knockbacks are no more than 5 yards when previously the have been confirmed to be at least 20 yards, probably more. anybody else notice this?

I never got to do this on my first 70, skipping most of the Theramore quests. I was sure to go back and do it while leveling my Mage. What fun!!! And having blink made it easier to get to each mortar. Good exp and a very entertaining event.

Note: If you fail and are forced to abandon the quest, Major Mills will respawn in about 10 minutes. Just wait for him at the center mortar.

one of the most epic boss fights id say for low levels.. reminds me a lot of the popular Banjo Kazooie bosses, running around using other things to kill the boss, while also being vulnerable to being knocked off an area to keep you from killing him.

Ok for Druids here is a easy way to do it and not lose anyone.
Stay in travel form,
Then hit the first cannon, then go to the right one then run back to the middle then the left.
the 2 marksmen by the middle cannon will lose health the fastest, just throw rejuv on them as ya run by and get back into travel.

for all others do the same but remember DONT STOP.
as ya run by the cannon, just click on it and turn around and run back.
no need to stop or watch the show, just keep moving or tethyr will shoot ya with a water blast that sends ya 30 yard back, maybe even to your death.

Another thing to remember is, not only how many archers you have, but also where you are. If you are blasted off of the docks and into the water, it is a failed mission. If you go too far away from the fighting area, it is a failed mission. I failed a couple times due to the water blast. I also failed once because I walked to the very edge of the western dock and was too far away from the mortars.

Did this as a warlock, kept getting thrown back to the tower. This is one of the funnest quests I have ever done in WoW to date. I wish there were more intriguing quests like this.

If you fail/abandon the quest wait a couple of minutes the guy comes back and you can get the quest again, Hope this helps.

The comment about getting thrown against the wall above is very helpful. In order to accomplish this you will have to click the cannons in a very specific order.

Tethir will hit you about every 2nd cannon you click beginning after the first. To drop him without incident, number the cannons as follows:
1 - To the left of the Quest Giver (facing the bay).
2 - In front of the Quest Giver (facing the bay).
3 - To the right of the Quest Giver (facing the bay).

Hit the cannons in this order:
3-2-1-2-3-2

That's it. He'll knock you back against the wall as you try to hit cannon #2, and maybe just after it. If you keep moving, he'll go down after shot #6.

Just did it.

It appears that there is no particular order that the cannons must be fired in--any cannon is available for you to use at any time. However, there is a cooldown on each cannon that prevents you from spam-clicking it, forcing you to either stay near one cannon and defend it until the cooldown is up, or to move between two or all three cannons.

When Tethyr first appears, the cannons will begin to sparkle, however, all of them will effectively be on cooldown (you can't click on them) until Tethyr swims around in the docks for half a minute or so while the marksmen get ready.

Standing on the left-most dock facing the bay for an extended period of time is a surefire way of getting knocked into the water behind you, which consumes time and generally eats more marksmen.

Tethyr has ~ 125000 health, and each cannon shot takes out roughly 10% of his health. It is exactly like a raid boss in that its level is hidden to all players, and, for the purposes of hit/miss/resist/etc., should be treated as your own level +3.

You can go into the water and damage it with regular attacks because of this, or snipe from range, but going by this method you'll pretty much fail the quest as all the marksmen will eventually be wiped out, leaving you, a spanking level 30ish, to tank and dps a 125000 health boss.

Use the cannons. Unless you're raiding it with 70s for fun.

Oh, and also, he is limited to two abilities: Water Bolt and a form of AoE knockback that interrupts spellcasts. His knockback spell can be predicted and avoided (you can tell where the spray is going to go from the graphics.)

His Water Bolt seems to only target marksmen, and is a single target spell that takes out ~30% of a marksman's health each time it hits. He usually hits a marksman for two water bolts. His knockback ability does no damage to you--unknown whether it does damage to the marksmen.

He does not engage in melee combat unless you tank him down.

First of all this is the best quest I've ever done in my whole WoW time. Though the rewards didn't work quite well for me, got about 5g for disenchanting the helm and selling the stuff on AH.

Here's what I did as a 34 shammy.

Accept quest and cast Ghost Wolf. Then go to the barrel on the west side of the dock. As soon as the commander yells FIRE AT WILL! click on the barrel and start running to the one north. Right-click it without stopping and go to the one east. Click it and get back to the north one, it should be ready by then, then go back to the west. Repeat all that about 5 times and you should have Tethyr down in about 1 minute and without Marksmen loss.

I did this quest on my first try with 9 out of 12 marksman still living.This quest is fun and so are all of the quests leading up to this one. When i di this quest i sort of just randomly clicked the cannons til he was dead a truly fun quest.

My buddy complete this quest with my help (healing) and he had 11 out of the 12 marksman left.

OK, here's something that is probably news. Did you know that it IS possible to help someone on this quest. No, you cannot shoot Tethyr. He has so many Health points and so much armor, it is a waste of time. He will kill all the archers before you can take him down. No, you cannot fire the cannons; only ther person on the quest can do that.

But here is something that I found out while doing the escort quest for the Defias Traitor in Westfall; you can heal the NPCs! Yep, even though the only person who can fire the cannons is the person on the quest, there is no restriction on bandaging the marksmen. I ran from one archer to the next, checking their health. When one of them was getting low, I threw a Silk Bandage on them. Guess what? They got better! I managed to save four archers and the player on the quest succeeded the very first time.

I did this quest as a lvl 44 warlock. The strategy I used was similar to the 3-2-1-2-3-2-1 pattern.

But when your walking around the dock to each of the cannons, go onto the ground, in front of the dock, so when he does his knock-back spell you'll just be immobilized for a second against the dock, then you can start running to the cannons again.

My advice, do not go onto the docks over the water when he is doing the knock-back spell, I failed this quest on a dif character many times in a row because of that, lol!

i tried this up to 5 times

the first 2? was when it was summoned by someone else, the other 3? i did myself. on the last turn, i fired the cannons without getting blasted too badly.

This was a pretty easy and fun quest, take the advise of concentrating on firing the cannons and do not attack directly. Don't waste any effort on healing the archers or buffing them you don't need too just keep running from cannon to cannon and keep firing. Do not wait at one cannon as it take to long to recharge. I just kept running from one to the other and only got knocked back a couple of times, finished with about 7 archers still standing. Paladin lvl 37 protection spec

Just finished the quest tonight. First attempt same as others started on left side and got blown off the dock on the right and failed. Read the posts here and decided to try new tactic.

Aspect of the Cheetah on and started on the right, then middle, left, middle, etc. I used the arrow keys to run and the left mouse to watch him swim around. Only stopped at mortars long enough to hear the pop before running to the next.

Do NOT try to shoot Tethyr with guns and bows or jump in and try to attack. Error message CANNOT ATTACK THIS TARGET. JUst use the action cog on the mortars when he swims in to the dock and completes one lap.

For those of you you actually DO the quest... as opposed to the ones who come upon it and think they did it (see below)... This can be really fun. I've found a few tactics that help... first, if you have the ability, buff the archers as they come out (when I did this as a Druid - first time out, I didn't give out buffs, all archers died and quest failed - second time, I gave them each "Mark of the Wild" and we took him down with nine archers still standing!). Also, when you shoot the cannon, if he's near or facing you, stay directly behind it after you fire... he won't wash you back more than a couple of feet, and you won't get stunned. Otherwise, Fire and RUN to next cannon, and stay behind it until his wash passes over, then fire and run to next gun. (If you're a hunter and get caught in his wash, shoot back a couple of times before going to the next cannon.) For some reason, this reminds me of the "Gamera" movies!

You should be able to do this quest as a solo with the help of the marksmen. You will need to just keep moving and watch for his water cannon breath. It has a good knock back. If you are working as a group, take a couple of seconds to figure out the rotation you are going to use for the cannons so that you don't end up with more than one on a cannon at a time.

Once we figured this out, the quest was really simple.

Had no idea this was a quest. Got off boat and there was this thing killing a Theramoore guard. So of couse I charged in and flipped to Def Stan. and started hammering away. BOY was I mislead... I was expecting a fight... I've had more trouble fishing in Elwynn Forest than slaying this beastie. I saw it coming, but I was disappointed there wasn't a drop for this creature. It had great shock value and it was fun to face, though.

Great quest here. Very entertaining and fun to do, especially when you see others arriving and don't know about the new quests in the area. :) I started with the right cannon, then to the middle, then left. I then went back and forth between the middle and left cannons. You shouldn't be knocked back into the water this way.

Silly me didn't notice at first. :-|
Stood like a lump next to the one nearest to Major Mills waiting for it to cycle. A couple of seconds into the "fight" I got sent flying and FINALLY noticed the other two. Started running around like a headless chicken, and I almost succeeded anyway. Tethyr killed of the last marksman a fraction of a second before I got off the final shot that would have done for the 1% health he had left... ;-)
Major Mills popped back immediately after I abandoned the failed quest, but I'd decided I'd drowned Theramore in enough murk and lashing rain for the moment.
...and you gotta LOVE the confused people shooting arrows, spells, guns, what have you a Tethyr. Mostly because it reminds me of me 15 or so levels ago.

Aspect of the Pack / of the Cheetah is great for manning the cannons. The quicker you go from cannon to cannon, the quicker you can shoot cannon, the quicker Thethyr dies.

I tried it with my 43 mage and my 40 hunter and it went MUCH quicker with the hunter.

This was the coolest quest I've ever done! I accept quests automatically without reading them, so I wasn't prepared when this quest started automatically; and it failed almost immediately. I abandoned the failed quest, logged off, logged back on, and picked up the quest again. I started at the far left mortar. Then I ran to the middle one and shot it, then to the one on the right, then back to the middle- so forth and so on. I got blown off track a few times (being a mage and being able to blink to make up for lost time helped a lot). I think I finished with 5 marksmen left. It was really neat- I suggest doing this quest if you get the chance. Not for the loot or the XP but just for the fun of it.

I started on right (west) and then middle and left (east) then back and forth between middle-left like a previous poster did. Worked like a charm. My first attempt i tried all 3 cannons and failed miserably. Mainly because I spent more time in the water than actually firing cannons.

I feel L337 now that I have defeated such a large and repugnant creature. YAY me!

Just run from cannon to cannon firing. They will reset by the time you can get back to them. Don't stop to watch or you will fail, just keep running. You will still get credit if other people help as long as it's one of the mortar shots that kills him. You might want to announce, "!Please don't attack the sea monster and screw my quest!". I know I did it and thought I was helping. That person failed the quest but I don't know if my buddy and I had anything to do with it since Tethyr killed all the archers.

The quest line to get to this quest was long and tedious (a lot of swimming), but well worth it.

I failed the actual battle many times - there seems to be a ring around the edge which, if you leave fails it. No need to log out etc if you fail - the guy is on a 3 min respawn timer - just wait for it. Watch out for his water blast move because, although it does no damage, that annoyingly sends you flying outside of the area and thus fails you the quest.
The marksmen seem to be invincible and other than getting knocked back the quest is VERY easy.

Rewards are rubbish as is the xp - but it is honestly the coolest quest ive ever done.

In between running from mortar to mortar, HEAL a couple of the marksmen. It makes them last longer. Then you can pretty much take your own sweet time. If you're a druid or cleric, just cast a RENEW on each as you're running by....

Just completed this. If you just go to one cannon and expect to shoot it you will fail. the key is to steadily run from one cannon to the next and fire the cannon. Do not stand still at one cannon because tethyr will kill the guards and you will fail within 10 seconds.

Second most epic quest I have ever done. I sorta did it solo, but other people in Theramore came and attacked Tethyr, but the big guy still shot his knock-back shots at me. First most epic quest I have ever done is 'The Embalmer's Wife' in Duskwood, where it's a race against time to get the Embalmer's Heart before his... 'Pet' Abomination destroys Darkshire. There actually is no timer, but it's pretty cool to imagine the town's fate rests in your hands.

Anyways, on topic, I just ran back and forth between all the mortars, got knocked back a few times, but otherwise, easy.

Don't even bother with the right hand cannon. The first time I started on left, ran center, then ran right and got blown into the water and failed the quest. The second attempt I focused on the left and mid cannons. Had aspect of cheetah on and ran in front of the cannons/dock/boxes/etc, basically stayed in front of anything that would block me if I went flying. It worked rather well :) Finished with 10 markspeople remaining.

ok, i havent actually done this quest but seen many people fail, watching it reminded me of the luker below ficht and his spout, it is possible to run just infront of the the spout and find cover before it gets to you. this could realy help not getting knocked bak

Apparently the quest can bug out if assistance is given. I found this out when someone started yelling foul, albeit censored, language at me.

It would be nice if Tethyr were only attackable for the quester.

Each mortar shot does 10% damage to Tethyr, so it should be very easy to kill him without ever getting hit if you run from one mortar to another. If you hit him when he's below 10%, then the final mortar shot will kill him.

If you abandon this quest, major mills disappears and you cannot complete the quest.

It seems indeed to be bugged, I tried it, and killed the beast, but it shows as failed because i didn't kill it with the cannon.

I took my lowest character, a 51 Paladin, and decided to do the new quests, just to check them out. I got to this one and it seems simple enough. On my run to the 3rd mortar, I got knocked back quite a distance. As I started heading back, I was informed that I had failed the quest. I'm assuming it's because I got "too far" from the action. Stupid, especially when Tethyr's attack has a knock-back effect. Just be aware.

I got the quest, ran to the left hand mortar (left as you face out to sea). For a while I couldn't fire the mortar, but eventually the archers all got set and the battle started.

I used aspect of Cheetah. Fired the left mortar. Ran to center one. Ran to right hand mortar. Ran to center one. Etc. just going back and forth from mortar to mortar. Tried to send in pet but that doesn't work nor could I fire arrows. The archers did.

I ran like hell from mortar to mortar and there were 9 archers left alive when the critter died. Goot reward for a hunter.

This seemed easy although I do not know why. I never got hit at all, probably because the instant a mortar fired I was off running to the next one.

Sea monster or no, we're not going to risk the safety of our shipping. I've ordered our best marksmen to prepare for a confrontation with this Tethyr. The artillerymen have augmented the dock's defenses with three mortars.

I'm going to order the lighthouse's lamp illuminated. If Tethyr does attack, it will be your job to operate the mortars and take down the beast before it can kill all of the marksmen. I wouldn't stand in one place too long, though. Using the mortars is likely to draw its attention.
