Warcraft Movie Updates: Three New TV Spots, Cassidy Gard Interviews, ILM Visual Effects Articles and Images

It's a big day for
movie news, so we've made another post with the additional news from today: three new TV spots, Cassidy Gard Interviews, and some articles and images showcases the visual effects by Industrial Light & Magic.

Industrial Light & Magic Images
were invited to visit Industrial Light & Magic Images, learning how the orcs in
were created. These articles were published following the release of the
ILM Visual Effects Featurette we covered earlier today
breaks down their visit into 50 facts, here are a few:
– The reason they went with CGI over prosthetics is because both the orcs and dwarves had special look that wouldn’t work with makeup.
– Some of the orc actors wore invisiline dental appliances to help make the mouth movements they would have if they had giant orc tusks.
– Durotan presented the same challenges as the Hulk, but with the added challenges of hair and a costume that had various layers of cloth, bones, trinkets, etc.
– Draka was the most challenging orc because she’s closer to human, and she’s very empathetic.
on backstories for even small characters:
Each clan has a simple representation (i.e. Frostwolf: fur tusks and blue body paint/tattoos), but also, each clan's personality dictates how every minute detail within the horde is designed, from body paint to hair to how they movie to the quality of their weapons. Nigel discussed how the artists would come up with their own narratives for even the most obscure character. For instance, if a certain elder of the clan doesn't fight anymore, it's not because he's old, it's because he lost a limb in battle or sustained a similar combat-ending wound.
on Durotan and Draka:
That first shot he was talking about was of Durotan and his wife and fellow warrior Draka (Anna Galvin). In the scene, we see a close up of Durotan’s face, with emphasis on his very expressive eyes. He’s watching Draka sleep, until he realizes she’s awake. She’s pregnant and the two joke lovingly about the baby, his name, and their relationship. It’s a scene one wouldn’t expect to see from orcs, unless you play the game and know just how “human” they really are. Jones joked that the scene was about himself and his very pregnant wife, who was in the theater with us. The crazy thing about that scene is, even before you hear him speak, you can see the emotion in Durotan’s eyes.
dives into many technical details, including that ILM had trouble rendering orc tusks but got some help from sister company Pixar's work for
. The excerpt below from the article highlights some details that should appeal to Horde players:
Another clan, the Bleeding Hallow, are from the woods, so all their weapons are made from the forest or pieces of leftover animal bones, all very low-tech. On the other hand, the Blackrock have a lot of metal pieces in their armor, with a color motif of black and red.
ILM also tried to take inspiration from the game lore whenever possible. For example, Kilrogg Deadeye famously sacrificed one of his eyes in battle, so they decided in the movie that his Bleeding Hallow would all honor the legendary orc by either removing their own left eye as part of a ceremonial ritual or sporting black makeup on their left eye to make it look as if they did. This is not a plot point from the movie, but backstory that was created to give this clan a history.
Apparently in the extensive third act battle, there were “loads of stuff” that was shot but didn’t make it into the final film. These moments were described by Jones as cool pieces of action that didn’t serve the need to move the plot forward. But who knows — Jones hopes that if people like the movie, they might be able render these extra bits for an extended edition. But don’t expect a much much longer film like the Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings or Hobbit extended editions.

Just because the faces were locked in by the performances of the actors, though, doesn’t mean anything else was. The team used the concept art of Wei Wang from Blizzard to figure out how to bring the characters from the video game into the real world. Then it was about making every single one of them unique. Outside of the eight hero orcs, 52 different orc types were created, and using a huge cache of different tattoos, armors, hairstyles, and looks, they were able to turn those 52 into hundreds and thousands of different variants.
The most fascinating part was a before and after CG Comparisons of the characters--including a Draenei woman. While Garona heritage was changed from half-draenei to half-human, fans have been wondering if we'd be seeing any Draenei in the film.
New TV Clips
A mysterious woman shows up in these three new clips revealed on
, urging the characters: "This world will burn if he is not stopped. But no one can stand against the darkness alone. Together, you can save this world. Remember, trust in your friends."
These clips have several new shots of Khadgar, including a humorous exchange where he says he lost his horse and then we see the Horde tossing the horse as it if weighs nothing. Some footage is also used of the scene where Medivh slams Khadgar against a wall with magic, and Lothar trolls him by pretending to help him up. In these clips, Khadgar comes across as a talented mage overcoming his fears to harness his talent
The stills are a little low-resolution as the quality of the uploaded videos was worse than usual.
Cassidy Gard Interview
While not a gamer,
gets some good details out of the cast in her interviews with
Rob Kazinsky started off playing as a human because he wanted to be the traditional hero in game. However, he rolled Horde when he server transferred to a top guild.
Rob is a proud member of forum culture! His favorite area of the game is Grizzly Hills and he generally skips reading the quest text.
He particularly likes the first 12 seconds at the beginning of the film, which just stay on Durotan's face. He explains this is a very brave thing to do in a movie, as Durotan is a motion-capture character and it could open up the visual effects to critique, but Durotan is just so well portrayed.
You may have noticed Duncan Jones wearing a distinctive shirt at some press interviews, and now we have the backstory on it. The shirt is custom-made, with an image of Orgrim Doomhammer overlapping with the prison plate his father, David Bowie, had to hold when he was arrested as a young man. The silver necklace he wears during interviews was a gift from his dad as well.

games starting from 20 years ago. Right now he doesn't have time for
but he likes playing
One of his favorite area's was the Lion's Pride Inn--it was pretty awesome when that area was used in the movie.
